Cuban President Miguel Diaz-Canel gave a speech on Thursday at the 76th United Nations General Assembly in New York.

During his speech, he denounced the ‘unconventional war’ that the United States has launched against Cuba, and how the country dedicates "publicly and notoriously multimillion-dollar funds” to it.

These comments come after the anti-government protests in Cuba on July 11 and 12, which were preceded and followed by an anti-Cuban campaign through social networks.

The president also referred to the health crisis caused by the COVID-19 pandemic worldwide, and declared that "international cooperation has been insufficient."

SOUNDBITES:

SOT, Miguel Diaz-Canel, President of Cuba (Spanish): “Under the devastating impact of a pandemic that has exacerbated structural inequities and the global crisis, the role of multilateralism and United Nations are increasingly important, and international cooperation has been insufficient. The implementation of neoliberal recipes for decades has reduced the capacities of states to meet the needs of their populations. The most vulnerable people have been left unprotected, while rich nations, elites, and pharmaceutical transnationals increase their profits. Joining efforts for the good of humanity today is not only urgent, it is morally necessary.” *NO CUTAWAYS AT SOURCE*

SOT, Miguel Diaz-Canel, President of Cuba (Spanish): “In this bleak context, vaccines against COVID-19 were the hope. More than 5,000 million doses had been administered globally by August 2021, yet more than 80 percent of them were applied in middle or high-income countries, whose populations represent much less than half of the planet’s inhabitants. Hundreds of millions of people in low-income countries are still waiting for their first dose and cannot even know if they will ever receive it.” *NO CUTAWAYS AT SOURCE*

SOT, Miguel Diaz-Canel, President of Cuba (Spanish): “With the pernicious use and abuse of economic coercion measures, which have become a central instrument of United States foreign policy, the government of that country threatens, extorts and pressures sovereign states to speak out and act against those they identify as adversaries. It requires its allies to build coalitions to overthrow legitimate governments, breach trade commitments, abandon and ban certain technologies, and apply unjustified judicial measures against citizens of countries that do not submit to them.” *NO CUTAWAYS AT SOURCE*

SOT, Miguel Diaz-Canel, President of Cuba (Spanish): “Today we are witnessing unacceptable political practices in the international context, which go against the universal commitment to defend the Charter of the United Nations, including the sovereign right to self-determination. Independent and sovereign states are led, under multiple pressures, to subordinate themselves to the will of Washington and to an order based on its capricious rules.” *NO CUTAWAYS AT SOURCE*

SOT, Miguel Diaz-Canel, President of Cuba (Spanish): “For more than 60 years the US Government has not stopped for a minute in its attacks against Cuba, but at this crucial and challenging moment for all nations, their aggressiveness exceeds the limits. The cruelest and prolonged economic, commercial and financial blockade that has been applied ever against any nation, has been exacerbated in an opportunistic and criminal way in the midst of the pandemic, and the current Democratic Administration maintains in force, without changes, the 243 measures of coercion adopted by the government of Donald Trump, including the incorporation of Cuba to the spurious and immoral list of countries that supposedly sponsor terrorism.” *NO CUTAWAYS AT SOURCE*

SOT, Miguel Diaz-Canel, President of Cuba (Spanish): “It is in this context that an unconventional war is launched against our country, to which the US government publicly and notoriously dedicates multimillion-dollar funds through manipulation campaigns and lies that the new information technologies and other digital platforms use to project, internally and externally, an absolutely false image of the Cuban reality, sow confusion, destabilise, discredit the country, and justify the doctrine of a regime change. They have done everything to erase the Cuban Revolution from the political map of the world.”
