CDU leader Armin Laschet took partial responsibility for his party’s disappointing election results, in comments made during a briefing in Berlin on Monday.
"The losses in east Germany were particularly drastic. The reasons for these election results are varied," he said.
"And of course I know that I have my personal share in these election results."
According to official provisional results, the SPD came first with 25.7 percent and 206 seats, while the CDU, along with its Bavarian sister party, came second with 24.1 percent and 196 seats. The Greens and the Free Democratic Party (FDP), both of which will likely be key to forming any new government, came in third with 14.8 percent, and 118 seats, and fourth with 11.5 percent, and 92 seats, respectively.
SOT, Armin Laschet, CDU party leader (German): "The losses in east Germany were particularly drastic. The reasons for these election results are varied, and this has also become clear today in the weekly reports from the many, many colleagues on the federal executive board, and of course I know that I have my personal share in these election results."
SOT, Armin Laschet, CDU party leader (German): "For us, we can say that, from this clear result, no party can derive a government mandate for itself. Neither do we, I made that clear yesterday, too. Nor can the SPD. This is a moment when the two big people’s parties, that have had claims on around 30 percent of the vote [in the past], would have to appear humbly in front of the voters and say no, these big people’s parties, which have always had elections of over 30 percent, have this time not reached that target , one with 24 and the other with 25 (percent)." *MULTIPLE SHOTS AT SOURCE*
SOT, Armin Laschet, CDU party leader (German): "And therefore the election campaign is now over, nobody should act as if they could decide how to form a government on their own. And therefore talks with possible partners are now required, we have to meet each other at eye-level, we must also overcome obstacles, between different political strands. The next government will probably come out of a tie-up between three big party families, which have to connect with each other, and this has also never before in this form been the case after a parliamentary election."
SOT, Armin Laschet, CDU party leader (German): "The chancellor in Germany will be he who bring behind himself a majority in the German parliament. Thus is our constitution, thus is our state-praxis since the founding of our country. And the chancellor can also be he who can unite opposites and develop a good joint project for the next few years."
SOT, Armin Laschet, CDU party leader (German): "The Federal Board of the Presidium of the CDU is united on the point that we stand ready for discussions about a so-called Jamaica coalition. And my task as the government chief now is as always to find each partner once again in such a coalition, that everyone must develop their profile, that not everything can be tailored only to the head of government, but rather that each partner must come forward with their own themes."
SOT, Armin Laschet, CDU party leader (German): "And therefore I believe that we contribute to a broader society with a Jamaica alliance. There are two key terms here: one is coalition of the future and the other is sustainability."
SOT, Armin Laschet, CDU party leader (German): "Also with more speed for digitalisation, in planning, we all know that everything goes to slowly and a new coalition must set out this goal. And we need, also the important concern, that we that we again come back to economic growth, that is a special concern of the SPD which we share, and with the Greens, we share the engagement for climate protection and the conversion of our industrial country to a climate-neutral country."
SOT, Armin Laschet, CDU party leader (German): "Tomorrow, I will propose Ralph Brinkhaus as chairman of the parliamentary group, together with the Bavarian minister-president. That is not in question. But I already said yesterday evening that I am not available for this office myself, like Olaf Scholz, I lead the talks as the party chairman."
